Miller Home Programs

Children Develop Emotionally, Physically and Mentally
Miller Home of Lynchburg, Virginia provides a loving and nurturing structured and supervised environment that meets the needs of each resident.  All basic needs will be met as well as opportunities for growth and development.  Behavior modification will be provided by the Level System as well as other consequences outlined in policy.  Each resident will receive case management services, in house counseling, referrals for any needed service, transportation, assistance with academics through study hall, and supervision and guidance from staff.  Miller Home of Lynchburg also offers services to the resident's family based on the needs of the resident and the family unit.  Family services include counseling, case management services, and referrals for services in the community.

Structured Environment
o Miller Home strives to provide a semi-structured
family environment that the residents can depend
upon for stability and security.  A daily schedule is
posted for the following day before bedtime and
          includes all daily activities.

Supervision of Residents
o Child Care Workers supervise residents and the
child to staff ratio shall not exceed 10 to 1.  The
resident's whereabouts must be known at all times
and if more than one resident is in an area then a
Child Care Worker should be present.  All
supervision must be active and meet the needs of all
residents.  Supervision is not just watching but
           engaging residents.  Supervision also includes
ensuring all Miller Home Policies are followed and
enforced.  Ensuring all daily tasks are completed is
also part of supervision as well as instruction and
assistance as related to daily tasks.

Behavior Management
o In caring for residents and ensuring their needs are
met, behavior management is a vital component.
Miller Home utilizes the Level System as the main
form of behavior modification in addition to room
restriction, loss of privileges or possessions,
assignment of sentences or chores, and rewards for
           positive and appropriate behavior.  Since
appropriate behavior is also necessary at school,
consequences specific to school discipline are
necessary as well.  Behavior management will not
be humiliating, degrading, harmful or abusive and
at no time will corporal punishment, mechanical
restraints, or chemical restraints be utilized.

The Miller Home Program teaches independent living skills through the main program, however, there is an increase in that need when a resident's discharge plan is to transition from Miller Home to the community without returning home.  Miller Home strives to meet that need through an adaptation of our main program for residents who meet specific criteria.  Eligible residents may enter into an Independent Living Skill Building Agreement which allows more opportunities for residents to learn and practice independent living skills.
